He was bought by St. Mirren from Clydebank in 1979 for £150,000, which was a record transfer between two Scottish clubs at the time.
He moved to Aberdeen in 1984 to replace Mark McGhee. McDougall became the top scorer in the Scottish Football League in 1985 as Aberdeen won the league. He became the fourth Aberdeen player after George Hamilton, Billy Willamson and Eric Black to score three or more goals in a single game against Celtic.[1] He had to retire prematurely due to injury in 1987.
He now owns The Criterion, a pub in Aberdeen which he turned into a sports bar.
